Cet article montre que l’anthropologie religieuse est le point aveugle du marxisme. Il renvoie dos-à-dos l’athéisme communiste et les théologies de la révolution en les saisissant comme deux faces d’une même hégémonie biblique s’exerçant sur le langage des luttes d’émancipation. Il analyse ensuite la façon dont la construction croisée des concepts de religion et d’aliénation limite la critique du capitalisme et de l’État. La critique terrestre devrait donc être refondée si l’anthropologie qui la soutenait s’écroule.

Il contributo intende discutere alcune questioni legate alla diversa visione del profeta dell'Islam in una prospettiva interculturale. In particolare si tentano di evidenziare le radici del problema concentrandosi sullo contesto storico in cui la questione ha preso forma. Emerge una critica alla maggior parte degli studiosi arabi che, storicamente, hanno evitato di affrontare lo studio di fonti non musulmane che potessero proporre visioni contrastanti rispetto alle credenze religiose condivise. Il contributo ha affrontato quindi il problema della traduzione di opere letterarie (...) occidentali in arabo, in particolare le opere in cui è implicata l’immagine del profeta dell'Islam: emerge una censura piuttosto diffusa che tende a omettere le parti considerate "offensive" per la sensibilità religiosa dei musulmani. La Divina Commedia di Dante Alighieri rappresenta il caso esemplare di questo atteggiamento. Obbiettivo del contributo è affrontare il concetto di diversità in modo costruttivo in modo da non nascondere i fatti attraverso la censura o la non conoscenza ma invocando un nuovo modo di confrontarsi nel contesto multiculturale.This paper discusses the frequent intercultural problems related to the different cross-cultural vision of the prophet of Islam. In particular, the paper highlights the roots of the problem; in fact, focusing on the historical background of the problem is extremely important. Moreover, the paper delivered criticism to the majority of Arab scholars who, historically, seemed to lack the willingness to study non Muslim sources that have a contradicting vision to their believes. The paper tackled the issue of the translation of western literary works into Arabic, especially those that tackles the image of the prophet of Islam, where the Arabic translation usually skip any “offensive” part related to the image of the prophet. For example, The divine comedy of Dante Alighieri. The paper tries to face the concept of diversity in constructive way, by never hiding the facts, as this can never be considered a solution, but a way to transform it into a very complex problem. Une dizaine de thèses contre la liquidation sommaire des « religions » opérée par les descendants de Feuerbach aident à réinterpréter l’Anthropocène comme étant un Sécularocène. Et si le Ciel qui menace désormais de brûler notre planète était celui-là même que nous avons cru pouvoir enterrer trop insolemment? Et si le rapport actuel de la République à l’islam illustrait dramatiquement cette insolence?

« Je t’aime moi non plus », le titre de la fameuse chanson de Gainsbourg reflète de manière exquise ce que la vie a de beau et d’amer à la fois. A défaut de traiter d’amour, cet ouvrage analyse les méandres de l’aide à sens unique. L’altruisme, ce comportement de don sans attente de retour de service, est abordé ici de manière scientifique et philosophique plutôt que poétique et littéraire. Un objectif est d’en traquer les mécanismes sous-jacents, ceux qui (...) échappent à tout romantisme et se traduisent souvent en calculs de coûts et bénéfices. Il s’agit également d’approfondir les diverses manières de comprendre et de pratiquer l’altruisme. Souvent considéré comme une des plus grandes vertus humaines, l’objet de nombreux écrits philosophiques et psychologiques, l’altruisme peut-il se trouver chez les abeilles et les marmottes ? Posez la question à un biologiste de l’évolution et il vous répondra « Mais oui, évidemment ! ». A première vue, une telle réponse est consternante mais nous verrons qu’à y regarder de plus près, les philosophes et les biologistes ne parlent pas exactement de la même chose en utilisant le même terme. L’hétérogénéité des disciplines intéressées à l’altruisme et des contextes théoriques dans lesquels il est utilisé en ont fait une notion extrêmement complexe et difficile à saisir. Au sein des différentes sciences sociales et du vivant, l’altruisme est un élément pivot dans trois débats dont cet ouvrage prend le temps de retracer les contours. Tantôt, l’altruisme se profile en danger (apparent) pour la théorie de l’évolution darwinienne (chap. 1), tantôt, il sert de cheval de bataille dans la croisade contre l’idéal de l’homo economicus si souvent prôné en économie (chap. 2 et 3), tantôt il est une énigme à découvrir dans les méandres de nos motivations intimes (chap. 3). Dans le cadre de ces différents débats, la notion d’altruisme prend des significations sensiblement différentes. Pour en rendre compte, l’ensemble de l’ouvrage s’articule autour d’une triple distinction fondamentale : l’altruisme peut être compris au sens biologique, comportemental ou psychologique. Chacune de ces notions est utilisée dans un contexte spécifique au sein de sciences qui ont leurs propres traditions et leurs propres débats internes. La structure de l’ouvrage est organisée en fonction de cette triple distinction. Le premier chapitre est consacré à l’altruisme biologique, définit en termes de valeur de survie et de reproduction (fitness) : un comportement est altruiste s’il a pour effet d’augmenter la fitness d’autrui aux dépens de sa propre fitness. L’observation de comportements altruistes au sein du monde animal a posé un des plus grands défis à la théorie de l’évolution depuis la publication de l’Origine des espèces. Des générations de biologistes se sont attelés à la tâche d’expliquer comment un comportement qui augmente la fitness biologique d’autres organismes aux dépends de la fitness de l’agent a pu être sélectionnée au fil de l’évolution. Nous verrons que c’est grâce aux travaux de William Hamilton et d’autres que cette difficulté a pu être résolue. Le deuxième chapitre retrace les attaques d’une frange d’économistes (supportés dans leur effort critique par des théoriciens des jeux et anthropologues évolutionnistes), contre le modèle classique de l’homo economicus. Leur objectif est de montrer que des personnes ordinaires ne se comportement souvent pas en maximisateurs rationnels de leurs gains propres, comme le prédirait la théorie économique néo-classique. Dans le cadre de ce débat, c’est du comportement social spécifiquement humain et plus particulièrement de l’altruisme humain dont il est question. Le terme d’altruisme est alors utilisé dans un sens plus lâche que ne le font les biologistes ; ce que l’on appellera l’altruisme comportemental comprend les actions coûteuses pour l’agent et avantageuses pour autrui. La particularité humaine fournira également l’occasion de traiter la délicate question des rapports entre l’évolution génétique et la culture. Nous verrons que l’étude du comportement animal fournit les premiers éléments d’explication de l’altruisme humain, mais ce dernier ne peut être pleinement compris qu’au terme d’une analyse qui tient compte des capacités qui nous sont propres. Cette analyse nous permettra de saisir pourquoi les êtes humains sont à la fois plus sociaux et plus opportunistes (la contradiction n’est qu’apparente) que les autres espèces animales. Malgré leurs différences, les versions biologique et comportementale de l’altruisme sont très proches au sens où elles traitent des conséquences de comportements. Ces notions ne reflètent qu’imparfaitement la conception ordinaire que nous nous faisons de l’altruisme. L’altruisme tel qu’il est utilisé dans le langage courant correspond davantage à l’image que s’en font les philosophes et les psychologues. Pour déceler les actions altruistes, ces derniers se demandent généralement si elles ont été causées par un motif dirigé vers le bien d’autrui. En ce sens, on parle d’altruisme psychologique qui réfère aux causes plutôt qu’aux effets des actions d’aide. Le troisième chapitre est consacré aux débats qui font rage autour de la question de savoir si les êtres humains sont capables d’agir de manière altruiste psychologique, c’est-à-dire en fonction de motifs exclusivement dirigés vers le bien-être d’autrui. Nous verrons à quel point cette tâche est ardue à moins d’accepter de reformuler la question en termes de motivation primaire à l’action. Au terme de l’analyse, il apparaitra que les trois notions d’altruisme se croisent sans se recouper dans un enchevêtrement de liens plus ou moins complexes. Nous verrons par exemple que l’altruisme biologique (voire comportemental) pourrait bien être une condition nécessaire à l’évolution de l’altruisme psychologique ; des liens tangibles peut ainsi être tissés entre ces différentes notions. Les diverses approches du phénomène de l’altruisme retracées dans cet ouvrage fournissent également des clefs de compréhension des méandres du comportement social animal et plus particulièrement humain. De manière générale, sans apporter de solutions toutes faites, cet écrit peut servir de guide sémantique et initie le lecteur à une littérature interdisciplinaire émergeante, foisonnante, passionnante quoique encore souvent parsemée de confusions et de contradictions. Le mal ne tourmente pas seulement la chair et le cœur de l'homme, il met en question sa confiance en Dieu et sa foi. Ce livre ne vise pas à donner à l'esprit une solution claire et suffisante, qui répondrait à ses questions. On ne résout pas un mystère. La tentation de se révolter contre (...) Dieu, à cause du mal qu'il permet, est fallacieuse, car la révolte n'a pas de sens en dehors de la Foi en ce Dieu qu'elle conteste; mais elle n'en a pas davantage à l'intérieur de cette Foi qui Le reconnaît comme infiniment bon et compatissant. Dieu est Amour et il est le Tout-Puissant : mais si son amour même introduisait au cœur de sa puissance une dimension de respect envers sa créature, qui se manifesterait en ce monde par une sorte d'impuissance? Si cette mystérieuse impuissance du Tout-Puissant était la condition nécessaire pour que l'Amour agisse en ce monde par la croix? Amère et incompréhensible ici-bas, la croix apparaîtra un jour comme elle est : instrument de victoire sur la mort, semence de vie et de joie dans la paix éternelle. C'est de cette « impuissance de Dieu » au sein de sa Toute-Puissance et au service de son Amour que l'auteur a osé traiter. (shrink)

Les recherches linguistiques, quelle que soit leur méthode, comportent toujours un élément de réflexion. Dans la ligne du livre remarquable de Denis Vasse, Le temps du désir, cet article veut contribuer à la réflexion sur „l'origine de la parole”. En effet, la conscience de notre corps ne manque pas de nous révéler des résidus de la vie inconsciente qui est à l'origine des structures de notre corps et du „corps subtil” qui est notre langage. Ces résidus sont e. a. les (...) trois dimensions corporelles , qui manifestement trouvent leur origine dans les trois phases de l'évolution psychique , et qui constituent trois formes de symbolisation appelées respectivement „expression”, „communication” et „signification”. L'„expression” est le corps subtil que l'enfant qui vient au monde donne en échange de tout ce qu'il reçoit de la mère. Par cet échange, la vie, commencée dans le sein maternel, prend l'aspect plus humain d'une présence réciproque. Mais la séparation de la naissance entraîne avec elle une menace constante de la mort, qui est - déjà plus humaine qu'une désintégration purement biologique des cellules vivantes - la déreliction, la détresse de l'enfant nécessiteux. Dans cette phase psychique, la conscience naissante ébauche une première structure d'elle-même : celle de la distinction entre l'intêrieur et l'extérieur ; l'homme ne cessera jamais de se considérer imaginairement comme le centre d'un monde qui l'entoure et dont il est la raison il'être. Et la dimension corporelle qui correspond à cette imagination, est celle du mouvement horizontal, le mouvement produit par les bras et les yeux. Puisqu'il ne fait encore que consommer, l'enfant commence par „com-prendre”, „saisir” la présence de l'autre. Le passage de l'„expression” à la „communication” va de pair avec la transition à la phase anale. L'enfant, par des jeux primitifs comme celui du „fort” et „da” , a appris à accepter une séparation plus longue de la mère, ou plutôt à refouler l'angoisse devant la menace de la mort, qui était la dereliction. Le temps où il apprend à se tenir debout et à retenir la défécation, est aussi le temps où sa conscience naissante s'ouvre à la concurrence de frère et de soeur , surtout à celle du père : la possession de la mère doit être partagée. Ce ne sont plus seulement les cris qui servent de corps subtil pour réaliser la présence réciproque ; celle-ci s'acquiert maintenant par le tenue du corps. La tenue du corps est le langage primitif qui est en fait une „communication” ; il fait trouver le moyen de relâcher encore le cordon ombilical et d'accepter la concurrence d'autres possesseurs de la mère, tout en éloignant l'angoisse de perdre celle-ci. L'objet de l'angoisse se déplace maintenant vers le danger de tomber, de faillir dans la maîtrise du corps et de subir amèrement l'humilitation de l'impuissance. La tension inconsciente, produite par cette angoisse, fair surgir une nouvelle dimension imaginaire : l'opposition entre le haut et le bas. L'effort que demandera toujours la construction de cette dimension verticale , continuera à servir d'étalon dans l'évaluation de tout ce qui demande de l'effort¹, en particulier le travail et la réalisation technique. Pour cette raison il est normal de dire que les salaires et les prix „ montent" — non pas qu'ils augmentent -; pour la même raison le fruit de l'effort, la puissance ou la sécurité, est symbolisé par un siège : le thrône du roi, le siège du président, la chaire du professeur, le siège aussi d'une ville, la pos-session du domaine. Il faut une troisième naissance pour que le langage de l'enfant passe enfin à la forme spécifiquement humaine de „signification”. Apprendre à parler, c.-à-d. à donner aux cris jusque là désordonnés, le „sens” de l'articulation, de l'ordre consécutif, c'est découvrir un monde qui dépasse de loin la présence de la mère et du père. Ce monde est „un relais qui vient s'interposer entre corps et le corps de l'autre ” . Le passage à la „signification” interfère d'ailleurs avec la phase phallique et encore avec l'éclosion du „je” comme sujet. L'ordre articulé des mots qui se suivent engendre la signification, précisément parce qu'il permet à autrui de „suivre” la pensée ; il est aussi symbole de la vie qui doit être une conduite ordonnée. En tant que tel il permet de refouler l'angoisse devant de désordre moral, la conduite désordonnée et devant le blâme ou la réprobation qui en seront la conséquence. En imaginant les projets d'une conduite future , la conscience se projette littéralement en avant et elle crée la troisième dimension, celle du lointain et du proche. Elle prend ici enfin la forme spécifiquement humaine de ïintentionalité, dirigée vers un paradis lointain qui tiendra la place de celui qu'elle vient de perdre. Pourquoi l'intentionalité est-elle spécifiquement humaine ? Parce qu'il est propre à l'essence humaine de chercher le sens de la vie et d'être déjà responsable de ce que cette vie pourra devenir plus tard. Or, c'est là aussi la structure du langage : une proposition, une phrase ne se construisent pas sans être prévues d'avance ; elle ne sont compréhensibles que quand la suite des vocables présente un ordre acceptable par les autres et une cohérence suffisamment logique ; et cependant cet ordre peut être si spécifiquement personnel, qu'il devient une parole authentique, nouvelle lorsque le sens en est cherché et créé par moi. Il s'ensuit que chercher l'origine de la parole, c'est chercher aussi le sens de l'existence humaine : par sa structure la parole reproduit l'histoire humaine et évoque le destin de l'homme. L'époque a le goût de la mort : mort de Dieu, mort de la morale, mort de l'art, peut-être même mort de la civilisation et de la planète... Cette tendance catastrophiste risque bien, non de nous éclairer sur notre situation, mais de nous aveugler. Nous finissons par ne plus distinguer les "paillettes d'or" (Diderot) du présent. Cela est sans doute plus manifeste dans les arts qu'ailleurs. Ce livre veut attirer l'attention sur la permanence du pouvoir créateur humain, notamment à travers (...) l'art contemporain, pourtant si bafoué par de nouveaux prophètes de malheur. La beauté n'a pas disparu pour qui sait la découvrir. Elle a une dimension morale, car la beauté fait vivre et respirer, instille le goût d'assumer son existence, donc de vouloir la vie plutôt que rien. Elle a une dimension religieuse en tant qu'elle fait signe vers plus grand, plus beau, plus vivant qu'elle. La sécularisation de nos sociétés peut certes troubler nos regards, nous rendant insensibles à ces dimensions de la beauté. Il n'en reste pas moins que, pour quiconque entretient en soi une vie culturelle et spirituelle, la beauté n'a pas cessé d'être évocatrice, et donc d'inspirer le désir de vivre, par-delà les "mille morts amères" qui parsèment nos vies. In this qualitative study, we aimed to identify and compare the ethical problems perceived by physicians and nurses in intensive care units at Baskent University hospitals in Turkey. A total of 21 physicians and 22 nurses were asked to describe ethical problems that they frequently encounter in their practice. The data were analyzed using an interactive model. The core problem for both physicians and nurses was end-of-life decisions (first level). In this category, physicians were most frequently concerned with euthanasia while (...) nurses were more concerned with do-not-resuscitate orders (second level). At the third level, we saw that almost all of the participants’ responses related to negative perceptions about euthanasia. Communication and hierarchical problems were the second most reported main category. Nurses were more likely to cite problems with hierarchy than physicians. At the third level, a large percentage of nurses described communication problems with authority and hierarchical problems with physicians. In the same category, physicians were most often concerned with communication problems with patients’ relatives. The ethical problems were reported at different frequencies by physicians and nurses. We asked the participants about ethical decision-making styles. The results show that nurses and physicians do not follow a systematic pattern of ethical decision making. (shrink)

AbstractEnduring unethical behavior in trading has generated much research interest, and scholars disagree on the reasons for this situation. According to MacIntyre (2015), this has to do with the personal traits of traders, whereas Rocchi and Thunder (2019) argue this is due to permissive work environment that can potentially be changed to favoring ethical trading. We contribute to this debate by exploring how interactions between organizational culture and management control systems (MCSs) may affect the enduring unethical behaviors of traders. We (...) conceptualize this with the concepts of organized hypocrisy (Brunsson 1986, 1989, 1993) and decoupling (Meyer and Rowan 1977). An in-depth case study of fraud (Jerome Kerviel at Societe Generale), informs the empirical inquiry. We develop the concept of organized decoupling to characterize how the MCSs are articulated with the organizational culture favoring unethical behavior, while being used as a ‘safety mechanism’ to manage the legal and reputational risk of the bank. The analysis highlights three key features of the organized decoupling of MCS: physical distance, technical distance and social distance. The study contribution lies in showing that decoupling is not only emergent but might be intended and therefore organized. The findings also raise doubts on the role of MCSs in monitoring trading activities as presented by investment banking institutions and regulators, suggesting more organized hypocrisy, and raising significant concerns regarding the creation of tolerable work environment welcoming ethical behaviors in the investment banking sector. A health justice approach requires a progressive critique of expertise. This article considers two recent high-profile cases – the mask mandate and medication abortion -- to understand how we should think the mobilization of expertise in the context of public health law. Following from this, the article offers news ways to better understand how to think of the relationship between health law, expertise, and politics.

This paper examines the impact of environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosure scores on the firm value of European listed companies before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a two-level model and a unique dataset of 264 multinational firms covering the period 2019–2022, we find a negative relationship between ESG disclosure scores and firm value. Nevertheless, the effect of the social and environmental disclosure scores disappears during the crisis, and returns negative during the recovery period. Almost all empirical studies (...) to date have found the inverse effect, suggesting that even though ESG transparency can improve firm reputation, it can also damage it and reduce firm value. We also show that firm-specific factors remain the biggest source of variability in firm value, even during the crisis. Thus, this paper contributes to the existing literature by suggesting that the impact of ESG disclosure on firm value may vary depending on the economic and financial context in which firms operate. More specifically, it shows that the benefits of ESG disclosure, namely the reduction of agency costs, stakeholder trust, and firm legitimacy, which are expected to increase firm value, may not have the predicted effect in a crisis context. Consequently, these findings provide both an empirical and a theoretical contribution to the existing literature on agency theory, signal theory, and legitimacy theory. (shrink)

The OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises have become increasingly relevant in the debate on the role of business in society. This instrument for responsible business conduct (RBC) is considered to be unique due to its implementation mechanism, the National Contact Point (NCP) procedure. The NCP procedure applies a pragmatic stakeholder engagement approach to contribute to the effectiveness of the OECD Guidelines. However, little is known about the effects of the NCP procedure. To fill this gap, this study provides insights into (...) the ex‐post effects of the Dutch NCP procedure on solving non‐compliance issues, the RBC performance of MNEs, and societal impact. This study developed a framework of different layers of effects. It used this framework to gather and analyze empirical data through interviews with parties that have participated in non‐compliance procedures. The effects found are mainly related to solving issues, while the effects on RBC within MNEs and their societal impact seem limited. Based on the findings, this study concludes that the full potential of the OECD Guidelines remains unrealized in most of the investigated cases. (shrink)

n this paper, a non-classical axiomatic system was introduced to classify all moods of Aristotelian syllogisms, in addition to the axiom "Every a is an a" and the bilateral rules of obversion of E and O propositions. This system consists of only 2 definitions, 2 axioms, 1 rule of a premise, and moods of Barbara and Datisi. By adding first-degree propositional negation to this system, we prove that the square of opposition holds without using many of the other rules of (...) classical logic (including double negation elimination). We then show that the Propositional Substructural Logic SLe is the best logic to study Aristotelian Syllogisms. Also, based on the IFLe square of opposition, the rules of conversation and the rules of negation are completely proved in Muzaffar's logic. For this purpose, we used the monadic first-order logic with the same standard deductive apparatus of quantifiers in classical logic, plus the axioms of "some a is an a" and "some not-a is a not-a". Finally, to show that there is no existential commitment to general terms in categorical logic, the Strong Four-Valued Relevant-classical Logic KR4 was used. With the same existential interpretation of the quantifiers and the standard translation of the quarter quantified. (shrink)

Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health continues a trajectory of U.S. Supreme Court jurisprudence that undermines the normative foundation of public health — the idea that the state is obligated to provide a robust set of supports for healthcare services and the underlying social determinants of health. Dobbs furthers a longstanding ideology of individual responsibility in public health, neglecting collective responsibility for better health outcomes. Such an ideology on individual responsibility not only enables a shrinking of public health infrastructure for reproductive (...) health, it facilitates the rise of reproductive coercion and a criminal legal response to pregnancy and abortion. This commentary situates Dobbs in the context of a long historical shift in public health that increasingly places burdens on individuals for their own reproductive health care, moving away from the possibility of a robust state public health infrastructure. When we conceptualized this symposium, Roe v. Wade1 was still the law of the land, albeit precariously. We aimed to commemorate its fiftieth anniversary by exploring historical, legal, medical, and related dimensions of access to abortion as well as the challenges ahead to secure reproductive justice. With the leak of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization on May 2, 2022, we shifted to mark the dawn of a new era. To examine how different ownership structures, varying from diverse ownership bases to narrow ownership bases, influence the extent of corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting by companies in emerging market. The motivation for this study is the reported inconsistent results for this association in developing countries and the lack of research in emerging markets. Eight hundred observations of 80 nonfinancial sector listed companies in the Amman Stock Exchange for the period 2006 to 2015 were used for a content analysis to assess (...) the extent of CSR reporting. Ordinary least square multiple regression analysis was undertaken to examine the association between five different ownership structures and their extent of CSR reporting. The results reveal three separate associations between the types of ownership and the extent of CSR reporting. First, the two types of ownership (foreign and government) have a significant and positive influence on the extent of CSR reporting. Second, another two types of ownership (Family and managerial) have a significantly negative association. Finally, institutional ownership has an insignificant and negligible influence on the extent of CSR reporting. These findings provide insights into how ownership structure influences the CSR reporting extent by emerging market companies such as Jordan. These findings suggest that policy makers, regulatory bodies, companies, and investors should increase their awareness about how different concentration of company ownership influences the extent companies voluntarily disclose CSR reporting. The evidence adds to the limited body of knowledge about different ownership groups' influence on the extent of CSR reporting in a developing country because few empirical studies have undertaken such a comprehensive analysis of this association. A Muslim woman might seek solace from India's patriarchal religious judicial structures only to find that the secular system's patriarchal structures likewise aid in their subordination and create a space for new forms of such subordination. Similarly, a marginalized LGBT Muslim might attempt to reject an oppressive religious formulation only to come to (...) find that the secular Indian state might criminalize a particular form of sexuality. This analysis explores how Indian laws "give meaning" to sexuality through the legal structures manifested by state and religious regulatory bodies and argues that both religious and state legal institutions need to be reformed to create a legal environment that furthers rather than inhibits a full realization of sexual rights. Shifting laws and regulations increasingly displace the centrality of women's health concerns in the provision of abortion services. This is exemplified by the growing presence of deceptive Crisis Pregnancy Centers alongside new informed consent laws designed to dissuade women from seeking abortions. Litigation on informed consent is further complicated in the clinical context due to the increased mobilization of facts – such as the gestational age or sonogram of the fetus – delivered with the intent to dissuade women from accessing (...) abortion. Our daily lives unfold continuously, yet our memories are organised into distinct events, situated in a specific context of space and time, and chunked when this context changes (at event boundaries). Previous research showed that this process, termed event segmentation, enhances object-context binding but impairs temporal order memory. Physiologically, peaks in pupil dilation index event segmentation, similar to emotion-induced bursts of autonomic arousal. Emotional arousal also modulates object-context binding and temporal order memory. Yet, these two critical factors have not been (...) systematically studied together. To address this gap, we ran a behavioural experiment using a paradigm validated to study event segmentation and extended it with emotion manipulation. During encoding, we sequentially presented greyscale objects embedded in coloured frames (colour changes defining events), with a neutral or aversive sound. During retrieval, we tested participants’ memory of temporal order memory and object-colour binding. We found opposite effects of emotion and event segmentation on episodic memory. While event segmentation enhanced object-context binding, emotion impaired it. On the contrary, event segmentation impaired temporal order memory, but emotion enhanced it. These findings increase our understanding of episodic memory organisation in laboratory settings, and potentially in real life with perceptual changes and emotion fluctuations constantly interacting. Consideration of reference systems for semivalues leads us to a global representation of the action of a semivalue on a game. Using this representation, we show how to modify semivalues to take account of coalition structures on the player set. The players' allocations according to a semivalue, including a modified semivalue, can be computed by means of products of matrices obtained from the multilinear extension of the game.

Companies that have joined the United Nations Global Compact are required to submit a Communication on Progress, which is an environmental, social, and governance report, to the UNGC every year. If they fail to do so, they are marked and listed as non-communicating on the UNGC website. Using the event study methodology, this study shows that a company that fails to report to the UNGC is penalized in the financial markets with an average cumulative abnormal return of −1.6% over a (...) period of 5 trading days around the event. Although a major critique against the UNGC is that the initiative’s voluntary nature and its lack of external monitoring and sanction mechanisms render it ineffective in terms of the business participants’ implementation of the UNGC principles into their operations, this result suggests that investors may be able to pressure UNGC business participants to increase their compliance with the UNGC requirements and to “walk the talk.”.
